Thruxton thriller: Cook, Sutton and Ingram take BTCC victories

The 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship returned from its mid season break with a dramatic triple header at Thruxton, as 22 drivers tackled the fastest circuit on the calendar for Rounds 13, 14 and 15. The Hampshire venue produced another memorable weekend of close racing, with Josh Cook ending his wait for victory at his favoured circuit before championship leaders Ash Sutton and Tom Ingram continued their title battle with wins of their own.

Sutton once again strengthened his championship challenge with a victory and two podium finishes, while Ingram responded with a crucial win in the final race to keep himself firmly in contention. With the fight for the title intensifying, Thruxton also delivered standout performances from the likes of James Dorlin and Mikey Doble, as the battle for the Independents’ and Jack Sears Trophy honours continued to develop.

Round 13

Josh Cook reaffirmed his status as the undisputed ‘King of Thruxton’ by converting pole position into a commanding victory in the opening race of the 2026 British Touring Car Championship meeting, ending a four year wait for another win at the Hampshire circuit.

The Speedworks Corolla Racing driver had already laid the foundations for success by topping qualifying and securing pole in Saturday’s Race to Pole, but Sunday’s opening encounter still required a faultless performance as championship leader Ash Sutton remained firmly in contention throughout.

Cook made the perfect launch from pole and immediately settled into a relentless rhythm, controlling the race from the front despite constant pressure from Sutton’s NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus. Although the reigning points leader never allowed the Toyota to escape completely, reduced hybrid deployment left Sutton unable to mount a realistic challenge, forcing him to settle for second place.

The victory marked Cook’s 11th overall BTCC triumph at Thruxton, extending a remarkable record at the fastest circuit on the calendar and ending a drought that stretched back to 2022.

Behind the leading pair, Dan Rowbottom delivered Cataclean Plato Racing’s maiden BTCC podium with an assured drive in the Mercedes A35 Saloon.

Rowbottom’s race was effectively decided within the opening corners as he capitalised on a fierce battle involving Dan Cammish and Tom Ingram. While the Ford and Hyundai drivers compromised each other’s momentum, Rowbottom swept into third and never looked back, comfortably holding the final podium position throughout the contest.

One of the standout performances came from returning driver Senna Proctor, who continued to impress while deputising for the unwell Sam Osborne. After a strong qualifying performance, Proctor produced another measured drive to secure fourth place, successfully resisting sustained pressure from former team mate Ingram over the closing laps.

Ingram’s recovery to fifth represented a solid salvage operation after a frustrating opening lap. The reigning champion lost ground during an aggressive three way fight with the two NAPA Racing Fords before carving his way back through the field, although the early delay ultimately proved too costly to challenge for the podium.

Adam Morgan underlined the pace shown by the resurgent Cataclean Plato Racing squad by taking sixth after an entertaining race filled with wheel to wheel battles, while Cammish slipped to seventh after his early skirmish left him unable to remain in podium contention.

Mikey Doble claimed Independent class honours in eighth for LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing, continuing his impressive run of form, while Restart Racing completed the top ten courtesy of James Dorlin and Chris Smiley.

Round 14

Ash Sutton strengthened his grip on the 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship with victory in Round 14 at Croft, extending his advantage at the top of the standings to 64 points after another composed drive for NAPA Racing UK.

Starting behind Speedworks Corolla Racing’s Josh Cook, Sutton wasted little time in moving into the lead when the Toyota driver ran wide during the opening laps. The reigning championship leader capitalised immediately, guiding his Ford Focus through and never relinquishing the advantage thereafter.

Once out front, Sutton controlled the race with the confidence that has become synonymous with his title challenge, steadily pulling clear while the battle for the remaining podium places intensified behind him.

Cook initially looked comfortable in second but soon found himself under increasing pressure from Team VERTU’s Tom Ingram. The reigning champion closed rapidly before launching his challenge in the closing stages, with the pair producing one of the race’s defining moments.

Their fight reached its climax at the final chicane, where both drivers arrived side by side on the limit. Neither car successfully negotiated the corner cleanly, although Ingram emerged ahead as Cook’s Toyota rotated into a half spin before continuing.

The incident left Cook vulnerable to the fast closing Dan Cammish. The NAPA Racing UK driver briefly moved ahead before Cook fought back, with the pair exchanging positions twice during an entertaining battle for the final podium place.

However, the order changed after the chequered flag when Ingram was handed a ten second time penalty for exceeding the permitted number of track limits violations. The sanction dropped the Team VERTU driver from second to fifth, promoting Cook and Cammish onto the podium.

Dan Rowbottom enjoyed one of his strongest performances of the season for Cataclean Plato Racing. Running with podium pace during the opening half of the race, the Mercedes driver ultimately settled for fourth after Ingram’s penalty was applied.

Restart Racing’s James Dorlin produced another impressive drive to finish sixth overall while also claiming the Independents’ victory.

Cataclean Plato Racing’s Adam Morgan added more valuable points in seventh, finishing ahead of LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing’s Mikey Doble.

Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport teammates Árón Taylor-Smith and Gordon Shedden rounded out the top ten after solid performances at the North Yorkshire circuit.

For Sutton, the victory represented another significant step towards a fifth BTCC title. By extending his championship lead to 64 points, the NAPA Racing UK driver left Croft having further strengthened his position at the head of the standings with another clinical display of race management and consistency.

Round 15

Tom Ingram returned to the top step of the podium with a commanding victory in Round 15 of the 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton, securing his second win of the season and keeping his title defence alive.

The Team VERTU driver made his move early, producing a decisive and robust pass on pole sitter James Dorlin during the opening laps. Once in clean air, Ingram immediately established a gap that neither of the pursuing NAPA Racing UK Fords could erase around the fastest circuit on the BTCC calendar.

Dorlin’s Restart Racing Hyundai had initially led the field away from pole position, but the youngster found himself under relentless pressure as Ingram, Ash Sutton and Dan Cammish quickly closed in. Despite eventually losing places to the experienced trio, Dorlin continued to defend resolutely and remained firmly in contention throughout the race.

Out front, Ingram controlled proceedings with authority, managing his advantage to claim an important victory in his championship campaign. Sutton crossed the line in second to continue extending his points tally, while teammate Cammish completed the podium after another measured drive.

Behind the leading trio, Ricky Collard produced one of the standout performances of the race. Starting 11th on the grid, the Team VERTU driver carved his way through the field with a series of bold overtaking moves to finish fourth, salvaging an otherwise frustrating weekend for the Hyundai squad.

NAPA Racing UK’s stand in driver Senna Proctor continued his impressive return to the championship by securing another top five finish. Having only been drafted into the #18 Ford Focus Titanium following Sam Osborne’s illness, Proctor once again demonstrated his pace with a mature drive to fifth.

Dorlin eventually crossed the line in sixth but left Thruxton with further Independents’ and Jack Sears Trophy success after another highly competitive display against the championship’s established front runners.

The race was not without disappointment, however, as LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing’s Aiden Moffat suffered heartbreak. After charging through the order and gaining 12 positions, the Scotsman’s impressive recovery came to an abrupt end when a mechanical failure forced him into retirement.

A thrilling multi car battle unfolded over the closing laps for the remaining top ten positions. Dan Rowbottom initially looked set to emerge on top for Cataclean Plato Racing, but Gordon Shedden produced a decisive move into Turn One to secure seventh place for Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport.

Team VERTU’s Tom Chilton followed Shedden home in eighth, while Dexter Patterson claimed ninth for Steel Seal with Power Maxed Racing. Mikey Doble rounded out the top ten for LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing after another solid points scoring finish.

For Ingram, the victory represented a timely boost in his championship defence, while Sutton’s second place finish ensured the NAPA Racing UK driver maintained his commanding advantage at the head of the standings as the 2026 season moved into its second half.
