Sutton Seals Historic Fifth BTCC Crown at Silverstone

The 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship moved to Silverstone for its penultimate meeting of the season, where Ash Sutton made history by securing an unprecedented fifth BTCC drivers’ title.

Sutton produced a remarkable charge from 12th on the grid in Round 26 to take his ninth victory of the season and seal the championship with one meeting still remaining. The NAPA Racing UK driver’s latest crown further cemented his place in the history of the series, with his fifth title moving him clear of the previous record.

Aiden Moffat had opened the weekend with victory in Round 25, while Tom Ingram signed off the Silverstone meeting with a win in the wet Round 27. With the drivers’ championship decided, attention now turns to Brands Hatch for the season finale.

Round 25

Aiden Moffat became the 11th different race winner of the 2026 British Touring Car Championship season with a commanding victory in Round 25 at Silverstone, leading home team-mate Mikey Doble to give LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing a dominant one-two.

Doble had started from pole position after the reverse-grid draw, with Moffat alongside him on the front row. However, it was the #16 Audi A3 Saloon that made the strongest getaway, with Moffat immediately moving alongside his team-mate and taking control of the race through Copse.

Once ahead, Moffat was able to establish himself at the front while Doble settled into second. The two PMR-run Audis quickly began to distance themselves from the chasing pack, leaving Moffat with the opportunity to control the pace at the head of the field.

Doble had little need to attack his team-mate, with the pair ultimately cruising to a comfortable one-two that underlined the progress made by PMR with its new Audi package during the second half of the season.

Tom Chilton completed the podium for Team VERTU, following Doble home to make it two successive podium finishes. Chilton had also featured on the rostrum at Croft and continued his late-season resurgence with another strong result at Silverstone.

Josh Cook was the leading driver outside the podium positions, taking fourth for Speedworks Corolla Racing. The reigning King of Thruxton also claimed the fastest lap of the race, adding another point to his haul as he continued to fight towards the sharp end of the championship.

Daryl De Leon produced another solid drive for WSR to finish fifth, ahead of Gordon Shedden’s Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport Hyundai.

Charles Rainford was seventh and led the drivers who had opted for the medium-compound Goodyear tyre. The WSR BMW driver was followed by CPRL’s Adam Morgan, while Árón Taylor-Smith and Dan Rowbottom completed the top 10.

Behind the leading runners, attention was firmly focused on the championship battle. Dan Cammish had entered the race as one of the few drivers still capable of preventing Ash Sutton from securing the title, but a mechanical problem for the NAPA Racing UK driver appeared to have handed his team-mate a straightforward route to championship glory.

Sutton, however, was having a difficult race of his own. The championship leader became embroiled in the midfield battle and could only recover to 12th at the finish, meaning Cammish’s retirement was not enough to bring the title fight to a conclusion.

There was still plenty to celebrate for the PMR camp, with Moffat’s victory providing the team with its first win of the day and Doble adding another podium to his increasingly impressive run of form.

The other major title was settled, however, as Dexter Patterson secured the Jack Sears Trophy. The Steel Seal with Power Maxed Racing driver added the accolade to his growing list of achievements in the BTCC paddock.

Round 26

Ash Sutton secured his place in British Touring Car Championship history by winning Round 26 at Silverstone and sealing an unprecedented fifth drivers’ title in emphatic fashion.

The NAPA Racing UK driver started the second race of the day from 12th on the grid, but produced a trademark charge through the field to take the lead on lap nine of 22.

Sutton had entered the race needing just a single point to mathematically confirm the championship, but there was little chance of him settling for a cautious approach. Instead, he attacked from the opening laps and quickly began picking his way through the field.

His decisive move came against early leader Daryl De Leon. Sutton initially edged towards the left before sharply switching direction and diving down the inside of the WSR BMW on the approach to Copse to complete his charge to the front.

Once in clean air, Sutton was able to pull clear and comfortably control the remainder of the race. He crossed the line to claim his ninth victory of the season and the 56th of his BTCC career, before celebrating with a burnout as the NAPA squad erupted in celebration.

The result also continued Sutton’s remarkable consistency throughout 2026. The new champion had now taken 18 podium finishes from his 25 completed races, underlining the strength of his campaign.

Adam Morgan produced another impressive recovery drive for CPRL, climbing from eighth on the grid to finish second and secure his place on the podium. Charles Rainford completed the top three for WSR after also starting from the front two rows.

De Leon ultimately slipped to fourth after leading the early stages, while Dan Rowbottom made it two CPRL cars inside the top five in another strong showing for the Mercedes A35 Saloon.

Dan Cammish made significant progress from the rear of the grid, climbing to seventh for NAPA Racing UK. His recovery keeps him firmly in the battle for second place in the championship standings heading into the final race of the season.

Árón Taylor-Smith finished eighth for Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport, ahead of reigning champion Tom Ingram and LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing’s Aiden Moffat.

Starting from the front row, Ingram initially slipped down the order as the wet conditions made for a frantic opening phase. Aiden Moffat, who had already taken victory in the day’s opening race, emerged as the early benchmark from pole position.

Moffat’s lead was briefly lost on the opening lap as Árón Taylor-Smith and Daniel Rowbottom moved ahead, but the LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing driver quickly recovered and reclaimed first place on lap six.

Ingram, meanwhile, began to settle into the conditions and steadily worked his way back towards the front. Just beyond half-distance, the Team VERTU driver made his move on Moffat to take control of the race.

Ash Sutton was also charging through the field. Having started ninth, the newly crowned five-time BTCC champion picked off his rivals throughout the race before passing Moffat one lap after Ingram had made his decisive move.

Sutton’s recovery ultimately earned him second place, adding another podium to his already remarkable title-winning campaign, while Moffat held on to third to complete the podium.

Gordon Shedden produced one of the drives of the race to finish fourth for Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport. The Scot gained eight positions over the course of the wet contest and closed in on Mikey Doble’s lead in the Independents’ Trophy standings.

Behind Shedden, Dan Cammish, Tom Chilton and Josh Cook fought a close battle for the remaining top-seven positions. Cammish eventually prevailed in fifth, with Chilton sixth and Cook seventh, the trio covered by just 1.8 seconds at the finish.

Taylor-Smith recovered from his early involvement at the front to finish eighth, making it three Toyota Corolla GR Sports inside the top eight.

Rowbottom brought his CPRL Mercedes home in ninth, while team-mate Adam Morgan completed the top 10.
