Felix Rosenqvist etched his name into Indianapolis 500 folklore after defeating David Malukas in the closest finish in the race’s 110-year history, sealing an extraordinary last-lap triumph in a dramatic 2026 edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”.

The Meyer Shank Racing driver surged past Malukas exiting Turn 4 on the final lap and crossed the yard of bricks just 0.0233 seconds ahead after 500 relentless miles around Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

For Rosenqvist, long regarded as one of IndyCar’s quickest yet most underachieving oval racers, the victory represented a career-defining breakthrough. For the Indianapolis 500 itself, it was another instant classic.

“It’s unreal,” Rosenqvist said afterwards. “I still can’t believe it.”

The race had already threatened to become a strategic thriller long before its breathtaking finale. Poleman and defending winner Alex Palou controlled much of the afternoon for Chip Ganassi Racing, leading a race-high 59 laps, while team-mate Scott Dixon remained a constant presence at the front as the pair repeatedly traded the lead through varying fuel and tyre strategies.

Their duel became statistically historic in its own right, with Palou and Dixon exchanging the lead 26 times — the most ever between two drivers in a single Indy 500. But despite Ganassi’s dominance through the middle phase, the race slipped away in the closing stages as cautions and restarts compressed the field into an all-out sprint.

Rain interruptions further complicated the strategic picture. A red flag shortly after half-distance halted momentum and intensified concerns over fuel mileage, while multiple incidents prevented teams from settling into a rhythm.

Among the early casualties was Katherine Legge, whose attempt to complete the Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 “Double” ended in frustration after she became embroiled in Ryan Hunter-Reay’s accident in heavy smoke on lap 18. Both drivers escaped injury, but Legge’s Indianapolis afternoon was over almost before it had begun.

At the front, Malukas emerged as a genuine contender during the final run to the flag. Driving with supreme confidence in traffic, he seized the lead late and appeared poised to complete one of IndyCar’s most popular breakthrough victories.

But Rosenqvist remained within striking distance and timed his final attack perfectly.

Using the slipstream through the final corners, the Swede drew alongside exiting Turn 4 before completing the pass in a drag race to the finish line. The margin eclipsed the previous closest Indy 500 finish and delivered Meyer Shank Racing its second Indianapolis 500 victory.

The win also made Rosenqvist only the third Swedish driver to conquer Indianapolis, following Kenny Brack and Marcus Ericsson.

Behind the lead pair, Palou completed the podium after leading the strongest overall package throughout the afternoon, while Dixon’s hopes faded late despite another masterclass in race management. Santino Ferrucci continued his remarkable consistency at Indianapolis by completing the full 500-mile distance for the eighth consecutive year.

The 110th running also underlined IndyCar’s growing momentum entering a new era under FOX’s broadcast partnership. A sellout crowd estimated at around 350,000 spectators packed the Speedway, with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark serving as grand marshal and delivering the traditional “Drivers, start your engines” command before the green flag.

Yet the day ultimately belonged to Rosenqvist.

For years, flashes of brilliance had hinted that the former Formula E champion possessed the raw speed to win IndyCar’s biggest race. On Sunday, everything finally aligned.

And in an Indianapolis 500 already overflowing with drama, unpredictability and tension, Rosenqvist ensured the 2026 edition would be remembered forever for its astonishing final few hundred yards.
